Abu Azmi is married to Zahida Azmi, they have two children Rushida and Farhan. Farhan Azmi is a hotelier and is married to Bollywood actress Ayesha Takia. Abu Azmi is a businessman by profession. His businesses include in manpower consultancy, hotels and investment businesses.
Career
Abu Azmi entered politics in 1995 and under his leadership the Samajwadi Party won two seats in the Maharashtra State Assembly. From 2002-2009 he was a member of the Rajya Sabha. Azmi is the only MLA from Maharashtra to have won from 2 seats simultaneously in one election.
Controversy
Abu Azmi, on the Shakti Mills Rape case, said: "Under Islam, rape is punishable if any woman, married or unmarried, goes along with a man, with or without her consent, should be hanged. Both should be hanged. It shouldn't be allowed even if a woman goes by consent". This statement drew widespread criticism from the public and his son and daughter in law.
